New Delhi, August 25, 2026: India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI)
has completed a decade of transforming the country’s digital payments landscape, emerging as one of the world’s largest real-time payment systems.
UPI was officially launched on August 25, 2016, by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), under the regulatory oversight of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). A pilot involving 21 member banks had earlier been launched on April 11, 2016
Over the past 10 years, UPI has witnessed extraordinary growth. According to the Ministry of Finance, annual transaction volumes increased from just 1.78 crore transactions in FY 2016–17 to more than 24,162 crore transactions in FY 2025–26—an almost 13,000-fold increase.
The value of transactions has also increased dramatically. UPI transactions worth around ₹0.07 lakh crore were recorded in FY 2016–17, compared with approximately ₹314 lakh crore in FY 2025–26, representing an increase of more than 4,000 times.
UPI has become part of everyday life for millions of Indians, allowing people to instantly transfer money, pay merchants, settle bills and make purchases using smartphones. Its interoperable design allows customers of different banks and payment applications to transact seamlessly.
The platform's growth has also extended beyond India's borders. UPI is currently operational in 11 countries, including the UAE, France, Singapore, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Mauritius, Qatar, Cambodia, Greece and the Maldives.
The scale of UPI's adoption is continuing to rise. In July 2026, UPI processed a record 2,366 crore transactions worth ₹29.88 lakh crore, equivalent to roughly 76 crore transactions a day during the month.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi marked UPI's 10th anniversary on August 25, describing its growth and reach as a major milestone in India's digital payments journey and inviting citizens to share how UPI has affected their daily lives.
From its modest beginnings with a small group of banks to becoming a major pillar of India's Digital Public Infrastructure, UPI's decade-long journey has fundamentally changed how Indians pay. Its rapid expansion has also positioned India as a global leader in real-time digital payments.
After 10 years, UPI is no longer simply a payment option—it has become a part of everyday Indian life.
