Bengaluru Woman Alleges Man Secretly Recorded Her on Metro; Police Register FIR

A woman in Bengaluru has alleged that a fellow passenger secretly recorded her while she was travelling on Namma Metro, prompting a confrontation that was later shared on social media. Police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) following her complaint and are working to identify the man involved.

Incident Reported Near Whitefield

The woman, who identifies herself as Sowpika on social media and creates travel and lifestyle content, said the incident took place at around 4.30 pm on Tuesday in the Whitefield–Kadugodi area of Bengaluru. She alleged that she noticed the man recording her without her consent and decided to confront him.

Videos shared online show her questioning the man and asking him to unlock his phone so she could check whether a recording had been made. Metro security personnel appear during the interaction as she seeks assistance.

Confrontation Captured on Video

In the footage, the woman repeatedly asks the man why he was recording her. She appears distressed as she seeks an explanation and asks him to show the contents of his device. The man is shown responding to her questions, but the available footage does not independently establish what was stored on his phone.

The woman alleged that the man took his phone back and fled when she attempted to get assistance. She subsequently approached Metro authorities and later filed a complaint with the police. Her account and the video have attracted widespread online attention.

Police Register FIR

Bengaluru City Police confirmed that an FIR had been registered and that an investigation was underway. Police teams are seeking to identify and trace the man, while CCTV footage from the station may help investigators establish the sequence of events.

The registration of an FIR marks the beginning of a formal investigation; it does not, by itself, establish guilt. The allegations will need to be examined through evidence, witness accounts and any relevant digital material recovered during the investigation.

Privacy Concerns on Public Transport

The incident has renewed discussion about privacy and personal safety on crowded public transport. Passengers may record videos in public places for legitimate reasons, but allegations of targeted or non-consensual recording raise separate concerns that need to be assessed under the applicable law and facts of each case.

Commuters who experience or witness a concerning incident can seek help from transport staff or police and preserve relevant evidence where it is safe to do so. Sharing unverified personal details or attempting to identify a suspect through online speculation can complicate investigations and may affect innocent people.

Investigation Continues

The immediate priority for investigators is to establish the man's identity and determine what happened. CCTV footage, the complainant's statement and other available evidence may help clarify the allegations.

The case underlines the importance of addressing complaints about personal privacy promptly while allowing investigators to establish the facts. Further updates from police will be needed to determine the next steps in the case.
