  • Indian Air Force chief Air Chief Marshal A P Singh said Russia has offered its Su-57 fifth-generation fighter jet to India, though no decision has been taken, and that the force may look at other platforms if the indigenous AMCA programme faces delays.

Singh's remarks came days after Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh had categorically stated that India has neither opted for a foreign fifth-generation fighter programme nor taken any decision to pursue one, instead pointing to the indigenous Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) as the path to acquiring fifth-generation capability. The AMCA programme has now reached the stage where Requests for Proposals have been invited from shortlisted vendors. "Russia has offered the Su-57, but no decision has been taken yet. We would like to increase the number of aircraft in our inventory... Our programme is AMCA," Singh said, indicating the indigenous jet remains the primary focus even as the force keeps options open. On the question of whether HAL would be penalised for delays in the Tejas Mark 1A programme, Singh said such delays happen when planned timelines slip. Separately, he addressed concerns over reports that Pakistan has acquired fifth-generation stealth fighter aircraft and begun training pilots on them, calling it a cause for concern, especially if pilot training is already under way, while stressing that modern warfare is determined not by a single platform but by how deeply it is integrated into the wider military system. He also ruled out a separate drone force for the IAF, similar to the Army's, saying drones should fight alongside manned jets rather than operate in a silo.
