PM Modi to Visit Canada on December 11, Carney Confirms After Phone Call: What Is on the Agenda

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will travel to Canada in December, with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney confirming the dates of the visit after a telephone conversation between the two leaders. The visit is expected to take place on December 11 and 12, 2026, and it is being seen as a major step in the rebuilding of ties between New Delhi and Ottawa after several years of strain.

Dates and Itinerary

Carney revealed the dates while speaking with visitors at an Indian restaurant in Calgary this week. He said Modi would be visiting Toronto and Ottawa and indicated that there could be more stops on the itinerary. The Indian High Commission in Canada also confirmed the plan in a post on social media, saying that the Prime Minister will visit Canada on December 11 and 12, 2026. Carney shared his experience of meeting members of the Indian community at the restaurant, saying the proud Canadians he met knew what community means.

The Phone Call

The confirmation came after the two prime ministers spoke by phone. Modi described the conversation as warm and productive and said the two leaders agreed to build on the positive momentum in India-Canada ties. They will work towards concrete outcomes across key areas of the strategic partnership, including trade, energy, technology, security and people-to-people ties. Modi added that, together, India and Canada are contributing to a more stable and prosperous world.

What Is on the Agenda

The trade relationship is likely to be central. Both countries are looking to finalise a comprehensive economic partnership agreement by the end of the year, and the visit could provide the political push needed to complete the talks. Energy cooperation, including critical minerals and clean energy, technology collaboration, education links and security cooperation are also expected to figure in the discussions. Canada is home to a large Indian diaspora, and student mobility and migration will be part of the people-to-people agenda.

A Relationship in Repair

The visit follows a period of serious tension. Relations deteriorated sharply after the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada in June 2023, when the then Canadian government made allegations against India. A year later, Canadian authorities accused Indian diplomats and consular officials of clandestine activities linked to serious criminal activity, and both countries expelled six diplomats each. India rejected the allegations.

The tone shifted after Carney became prime minister in 2025. Modi attended the G7 summit in Canada in June 2025 at his invitation, and Carney made his first official visit to India in early 2026, when he described India as a reliable trading partner. Canadian authorities have since said there are no current criminal links connecting India to transnational repression in Canada. Canada's Foreign Minister Anita Anand also met External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar in New Delhi this week as part of the preparations.

Why It Matters

For India, the visit offers a chance to put a difficult chapter behind it and open access to a market and an energy partner that has been largely off the table for two years. For Canada, closer ties with India fit a broader effort to diversify trade partners. Both governments will need to handle sensitive issues carefully, and any progress will be closely watched by the diaspora and by political groups in both countries.

As the date approaches, officials are expected to announce more details about the programme, including meetings with business leaders and community events.
