Key Highlights
  • Retired KPSC assistant secretary T Prakash, who is under investigation in connection with alleged irregularities in Karnataka Public Service Commission recruitment, withdrew two anticipatory bail applications, even as the Karnataka High Court separately dismissed a bail plea filed by suspended KPSC chairman Shivashankarappa S Sahukar in the veterinary officer recruitment scam case.

T Prakash, a retired assistant secretary at the KPSC, is facing investigation in connection with alleged irregularities across two separate recruitment scandals handled by the commission. He withdrew both anticipatory bail petitions he had filed, with reports indicating the probe includes scrutiny of objections raised by the Enforcement Directorate. In a related case, the Karnataka High Court on Monday dismissed the anticipatory bail petition filed by Shivashankarappa S Sahukar, the suspended KPSC chairperson, in connection with the alleged scam in the recruitment of 400 veterinary officers. Sahukar has been booked under BNS Section 318 for cheating and under provisions of the Karnataka Public Examinations (Measures for Prevention of Corruption and Unfair Means in Recruitment) Act. During the hearing, Justice S Vishwajit Shetty made pointed oral observations about the scale of the alleged fraud, remarking that the public was losing faith in the examination system and recalling that meritorious NEET students had died by suicide over similar concerns. The judge said such practices needed to be put to an end and that those responsible "should be arrested then and there," noting that several of Sahukar's family members were allegedly involved, which he described as "nothing but a systematic fraud." The case is one of several recent actions in the scandal; a Bengaluru court had earlier, on September 26, also rejected the bail plea of suspended IAS officer Gyanendra Kumar Gangwar, the former Controller of Examinations, who is accused in the same veterinary officer recruitment case involving allegations of leaked question papers, tampered OMR sheets and candidates being charged Rs 70-80 lakh for selection.
