Hero Pilot Smit Machchhar to Be Awarded Visisht Gujarat Garima Award

Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel made the announcement, saying "the courage of Captain Smit Machchhar, the pilot of the flight headed to Israel, is being saluted by the entire world today." Patel described Machchhar, who hails from Ghatkopar in Mumbai, as a "valiant son of Gujarat" and said that to honour his extraordinary act of bravery and humanity, the state government would bestow the Visisht Gujarat Garima Award on him. He added that people across the state were praying for his speedy recovery. The Visisht Gujarat Garima Award is a high state honour given by the Gujarat government to recognise extraordinary acts of bravery, heroism and service that bring pride to the state and the nation. The announcement followed Machchhar being hailed internationally, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi calling him a "HERO" on X, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praising his "extraordinary bravery" for preventing what he called a "catastrophic mid-air disaster," and former US President Donald Trump also describing him as a hero for managing to open the cockpit door and call for help despite being badly wounded. Captain Machchhar's brother also works as a flydubai pilot.
