- The Federation of Indian Pilots has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking a National Bravery Award or national civilian recognition for flydubai Captain Smit Machchhar, who was seriously injured while helping avert a disaster aboard flight FZ1073.
In the letter, FIP president Captain C S Randhawa said Captain Machchhar's conduct during the September 30 cockpit incident, in which he was stabbed but continued to act despite his injuries, warranted "special recognition." The federation said his actions under circumstances of extreme personal danger contributed to bringing the aircraft safely to an alternate airport in Saudi Arabia, and asked the Prime Minister's Office to kindly consider him for an appropriate national bravery award or national civilian recognition, subject to applicable government provisions and verification of the facts by competent authorities. The FIP also noted that Captain Machchhar had been a member of the federation until 2022 and said it continues to regard him as part of the wider fraternity of professional pilots. The letter asked the government to examine the circumstances of the incident and obtain the relevant operational and medical records before deciding on the highest appropriate form of recognition. The request follows Prime Minister Modi's own public praise for Machchhar's courage, and comes a day after Machchhar spoke to Modi over the phone from his hospital bed, describing how he managed to open the cockpit door despite being seriously wounded and lying on the cockpit floor.
