Panther and Leopard Sightings Trigger Panic in Dandeli Residential Areas
Dandeli (Uttara Kannada): Frequent sightings of a black panther and a spotted leopard in the forest fringes and residential localities around Dandeli have created widespread anxiety among locals.
The big cats have been spotted moving through several areas, including Ambewadi, IPM Area, TRT Colony, Hasanamala, Sakkalaga, and Bedara Shiraguru.
According to locals, a black panther strayed into a homestay in Hasanamala a few days ago and killed a pet dog. The same panther was later reportedly seen near TRT Colony. Meanwhile, residents spotted a spotted leopard roaming near the VTU campus in Ambewadi at night. Commuters on two-wheelers have also reported close encounters with the big cats along these routes.
While no human attacks have been reported so far, the predators have reportedly targeted stray dogs and cattle. Wildlife straying into human habitations in search of easy prey has raised serious safety concerns among residents.
Wildlife experts clarify that the black panther is not a separate species.
- • Melanism: The dark coat is the result of melanism, a rare genetic trait found in ordinary leopards. Under direct sunlight, the characteristic spot patterns (rosettes) remain visible beneath the dark coat.
- • Ecological Value: The presence of black panthers in the Dandeli forest reserve highlights the region's rich biodiversity, making it a major attraction for wildlife enthusiasts and tourists from across the country.

The Forest Department now faces a dual challenge: ensuring the safety of local residents in affected zones while safeguarding these rare wildlife species from human-animal conflict. Local administration and forest officials are expected to step up patrolling in the vulnerable areas to prevent further escalation.
