The National Testing Agency (NTA) will re-conduct the UGC NET June 2026 examination for three subjects, English, Commerce and Sociology, after an expert committee found multiple errors in the question papers. The re-examination will be conducted in September, with no additional examination fee charged from candidates.
NTA conducted the UGC NET June 2026 examination from June 22 to June 30 across 87 subjects for Junior Research Fellowship (JRF), eligibility for Assistant Professor and admission to PhD programmes. Following complaints regarding the English, Commerce and Sociology papers, NTA constituted a committee to examine the reported issues.
The committee identified several factual, typographical and translation-related errors in the three papers. These included misspelt names of prominent scholars, garbled book titles, errors in question wording, grammatical mistakes, incorrect gender and number agreements, punctuation errors and the use of non-standard coined terms for established concepts.
The committee also found that a significant number of questions had been repeated from previous examinations. It recommended that the three papers be re-conducted to ensure a fair and error-free examination. NTA said the extent of the defects meant they could not be addressed merely by dropping questions after the answer-key challenge process.
UGC-NET Re-exam 2026 Schedule
The English paper will be re-conducted on September 9, 2026, in Shift 1 from 9 AM to 12 Noon. The Commerce paper will be held on the same day in Shift 2 from 3 PM to 6 PM.
The Sociology paper will be conducted on September 10, 2026, in Shift 1 from 9 AM to 12 Noon. NTA said details regarding examination cities, centres and admit cards will be notified separately on its official websites.
Candidates appearing for the re-conducted papers will not have to pay any additional examination fee.
Meanwhile, results for the remaining 84 subjects, for which the answer-key challenge process was issued earlier, will be declared as scheduled. NTA said the re-examination of the three subjects will not delay JRF seat allocation or the issuance of e-certificates for Assistant Professor and PhD eligibility for these 84 subjects.
Check the notice issued by NTA below:
For eligibility for Assistant Professor, the number of qualified candidates will be 6% of those who appeared in the June 2026 test or the re-test, whichever is higher. NTA also said that subject-wise allocations for the three re-conducted papers will follow the UGC-NET Information Bulletin and that already allocated numbers will not be reduced after the re-test.
