TVK Functionary Arrested in Methamphetamine Case, Udhayanidhi Stalin Questions Vijay's "Give Up Drugs" Campaign

The arrest of a Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam functionary in a large methamphetamine case in Nagapattinam has triggered a political attack on Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay, who leads the ruling party and has been promoting a campaign against drug abuse. Opposition leaders have used the incident to question the party's commitment to its own message.

The Arrest in Nagapattinam

On Friday, October 16, officers of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence arrested N Boopalan, aged 42, in connection with the alleged smuggling of about 135 kg of methamphetamine, a synthetic drug. Boopalan is an advocate and a member of the TVK's Nagapattinam district executive committee. He was arrested after searches at his residence. The DRI's Tiruchy zone also arrested a second person, identified as J Sughan, alias Suganathan, aged 27, a resident of Prathaparamanallur. Reports have estimated the market value of the consignment at roughly Rs 270 crore, although some accounts mention a seizure of 100 kg, and the exact quantity and value will be clarified as the investigation proceeds.

A Photo That Went Viral

After the arrest, a photograph showing Boopalan with Chief Minister Vijay, who is also the TVK president, began circulating on social media. Such images are common in politics and do not by themselves prove any link, but they quickly became a talking point as opponents sought to connect the case with the ruling party. DMK president M K Stalin said Boopalan had handled election responsibilities for the Kilvelur Assembly constituency and asked how a person facing such serious allegations had held organisational responsibilities in the ruling party.

Udhayanidhi's Attack

Leader of the Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin reacted sharply, saying that while the Chief Minister runs marathons with the slogan "Give up drugs, take up sports," members of his own party appear to be doing the opposite. He questioned the credibility of the anti-drug campaign and called on central agencies, including the National Investigation Agency and the Enforcement Directorate, to conduct a comprehensive and impartial investigation and take action against everyone involved in the alleged smuggling network.

More Criticism from the Opposition

Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam president T T V Dhinakaran also criticised the Chief Minister, asking what use it is to run a marathon and pretend to oppose drugs in public while keeping drug smugglers within the party. On Saturday, M K Stalin escalated the rhetoric by calling the TVK a "Breaking Bad" party, a reference to the television crime series, and asked whether the party's leader had been preaching to the public while harbouring a major drug mafia within his own ranks. He said authorities must identify everyone involved and dismantle the entire network.

What the Case Means Politically

Drugs have become a major political issue in Tamil Nadu, and the TVK has made the fight against narcotics part of its public messaging. The arrest of a district-level functionary gives the opposition a ready argument, even though the party leadership may argue that the law is taking its course and that individuals are responsible for their own actions. Whether the case widens will depend on what the investigation finds about the supply chain and the people behind the consignment.

It is important to note that the allegations against Boopalan are yet to be tested in court, and the TVK's formal response to the opposition's attacks was not available in the reports reviewed.

This report is based on published news coverage and statements attributed to the individuals involved. The accused are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
