Three Fishermen Die from Toxic Fumes While Cleaning Boat at Tadadi Port in Gokarna

KARWAR: Three fishermen died in a tragic incident at Tadadi fishing port in Uttara Kannada district after reportedly suffocating from toxic fumes while cleaning a boat's fish storage compartment. The incident occurred within the limits of the Gokarna police station and has prompted an investigation by the local police.

The deceased have been identified as Noushad, 48, Ameen, 40, and Aman, 26. According to reports, the fishermen were working aboard a boat named Kucheima, which had returned to the port after a fishing expedition for Chaman fish.

Incident Occurred During Boat Cleaning

After the boat docked at Tadadi port, the crew reportedly entered the fish hold to unload the catch. Once the unloading process was completed, the fishermen began cleaning the storage compartment in preparation for further use.

During the cleaning operation, the men were exposed to fumes and gases believed to have accumulated inside the enclosed space. Reports indicate that gases associated with decomposing fish, along with the strong odour inside the compartment, may have contributed to the incident. The three fishermen reportedly succumbed to asphyxiation at the scene.

The circumstances surrounding the accumulation of gases and the precise cause of death will need to be established through the investigation and relevant medical findings.

Two People Rescued, One in Critical Condition

According to the available information, five individuals were caught up in the incident. While three fishermen died, two others were rescued from the affected area.

One of the survivors is reported to be in critical condition and is receiving medical treatment at a hospital. Further information about the condition of the injured survivor and the circumstances of the rescue has not been provided.

The incident has highlighted the potential dangers associated with entering enclosed boat compartments where gases may accumulate without adequate ventilation. Such spaces can become hazardous even when there is no immediately visible sign of danger.

Gokarna Police Begin Investigation

The Gokarna police have registered a case in connection with the deaths and initiated an investigation. Authorities are expected to examine the circumstances of the incident and establish the factors that led to the suspected exposure to toxic gases.

The investigation will be important in determining the precise cause of the deaths and whether any safety precautions were missing during the cleaning operation. The findings may also help clarify the risks associated with working inside fish holds and other enclosed spaces on fishing vessels.

Safety Risks in Enclosed Fishing Compartments

Fish storage compartments and other enclosed areas can pose serious risks when ventilation is inadequate and gases accumulate from decomposing organic matter. Depending on the conditions, hazardous atmospheres may contain gases that can cause poisoning, oxygen deficiency or sudden loss of consciousness.

Entering such spaces without proper assessment and safety equipment can be dangerous. Appropriate ventilation, atmospheric testing and trained rescue procedures are important safeguards when workers need to access potentially hazardous compartments.

Rescuers must also exercise caution because entering an unsafe enclosed space without protection can expose additional people to the same danger. Emergency services and trained personnel should assess the atmosphere before attempting a rescue.

A Tragic Incident at Tadadi Fishing Port

The deaths of Noushad, Ameen and Aman have brought attention to the risks faced by fishing crews during routine work after returning to port. Tasks such as unloading catches and cleaning storage areas may appear ordinary, but enclosed spaces can present hidden hazards when gases or insufficient oxygen are present.

As the police investigation continues, further findings are expected to clarify the circumstances of the incident. The immediate priorities remain establishing the cause of the deaths, supporting the injured survivor and understanding how the tragedy occurred.
