Key Highlights
  • Sonam Wangchuk apologised after the Central Tibetan Administration objected to his comparison between the situation in Ladakh and Tibet.
  • Wangchuk said he was referring specifically to the events in Leh on September 24, 2025.

Sonam Wangchuk made the remarks at NDS Ground in Leh during a gathering marking the first anniversary of the September 24, 2025 violence, in which four protesters were killed in police firing. Wangchuk said Ladakh chose to remain with India because of its democratic system and the promise of dignity, but argued that the situation had since deteriorated. He also compared the situation in Ladakh with conditions in Tibet. The Dharamshala-based Central Tibetan Administration rejected the comparison, calling it misplaced and inaccurate. CTA spokesperson Tenzin Lekshay said the remarks did not reflect the situation inside Tibet. Ladakhi singer Tenzin Shayan supported Wangchuk's advocacy for Ladakh but objected to his characterisation of Tibet, referring to issues including imprisonment, self-immolation and restrictions on religious and cultural expression. In a video message, Wangchuk offered an unequivocal and unconditional apology for what he described as an inappropriate comparison. He said the experiences of Tibetans over the past eight to nine decades could not be compared with a single day in Leh. He also clarified that he was referring specifically to the violence in Leh and said the internet shutdown had limited information available outside the region.
