R. Ashoka Accuses Karnataka Government of Diverting Attention from Drought and Public Issues
Karnataka Legislative Assembly Leader of Opposition R. Ashoka has accused the state government of diverting public attention towards the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and a sting-operation controversy rather than focusing on urgent public concerns. In an interaction with The New Indian Express, Ashoka discussed drought conditions, welfare schemes, electoral administration and civic problems in Bengaluru, while expressing confidence in the BJP-JD(S) alliance’s prospects for the 2028 Assembly elections.
Drought and Government Priorities
Ashoka argued that drought should be a central priority for the government, particularly when farmers and rural communities are facing difficult conditions. He criticised the amount of political attention being directed towards the SIR exercise and the sting-operation controversy, claiming that these matters were distracting from issues affecting residents’ livelihoods.
His comments reflect the Opposition’s broader attempt to challenge the government’s record on public administration. The government’s position and independently verified data are necessary to assess the full extent of drought-related needs and the response being provided to affected communities.
Voter Rolls and Welfare Schemes
Ashoka defended the SIR process as a routine electoral exercise and argued that the Election Commission should assess the validity of applications seeking voter deletions. The issue has become politically contentious, with questions about voter-list accuracy and the possibility of legitimate voters being removed.
He also criticised delays affecting pension payments and raised concerns about the cost and implementation of welfare schemes. Such claims require comparison with official payment records, programme guidelines and the government’s explanations to establish their accuracy and scale.
Bengaluru’s Civic Challenges
The Opposition leader raised issues involving waste management, abandoned vehicles, footpath encroachments and staffing levels across Bengaluru’s civic administration. He questioned whether the available personnel and equipment were sufficient to address the city’s infrastructure and public-space challenges.
These concerns are significant because civic services affect residents’ daily lives, including mobility, sanitation and public safety. Addressing them requires adequate resources, effective coordination and transparent monitoring of progress.
Political Implications Ahead of 2028
Ashoka predicted a strong performance by the BJP-JD(S) alliance in the next Assembly election. That forecast represents his political assessment rather than a guaranteed outcome. The election remains dependent on voter preferences, party organisation, candidate selection and the performance of the competing parties.
His remarks underline the growing political contest over governance priorities in Karnataka. The claims should be assessed alongside official responses and verifiable information on drought relief, welfare delivery, electoral administration and Bengaluru’s civic management.
