- Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring has resigned amid months of factional infighting within the state unit, with former minister Vijay Inder Singla emerging as the frontrunner to replace him ahead of the 2027 Assembly polls.
Warring, who took charge of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee in April 2022 after the party's heavy defeat to the Aam Aadmi Party, has told the party high command that his tenure was over and that he will hand over the post to his successor. The Congress high command is expected to announce his replacement within 24 to 48 hours. Besides Singla, a former minister and MP who was appointed chairperson of the party's election management and coordination committee in July, Jalandhar Cantonment MLA Pargat Singh and Gurdaspur MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa are also reportedly in contention for the post. The leadership change follows prolonged differences between Warring and former chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi, which had become increasingly visible in recent months, with rival factions emerging within the state unit. The move gained momentum after Sachin Pilot was appointed AICC general secretary in charge of Punjab affairs, with reports indicating the decision was approved by central leaders including Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge and K C Venugopal following consultations with Pilot. Punjab, which goes to the polls in 2027, is seen as one of the Congress's better prospects among the states voting that year, though the party continues to grapple with internal factionalism.
