Mumbai Indians Part Ways With Lasith Malinga Ahead of IPL 2027

Mumbai Indians have announced that former Sri Lanka fast bowler Lasith Malinga, bowling coach Paras Mhambrey and fielding coach Carl Hopkinson will leave their roles in the franchise's men's team coaching setup. The departures form part of a wider restructuring ahead of the 2027 Indian Premier League season.

Franchise Confirms Coaching Changes

Mumbai Indians confirmed the changes in a statement thanking the three staff members for their commitment, contributions and service. The franchise also wished them well in their future professional endeavours.

The announcement follows the earlier departure of head coach Mahela Jayawardene, with former Mumbai Indians captain Kieron Pollard appointed to lead the team as head coach. The sequence of changes signals a substantial review of the coaching structure following a difficult 2026 campaign.

Malinga's Long Association With Mumbai Indians

Malinga is one of the most recognisable figures in Mumbai Indians' history. He represented the franchise from 2009 to 2019 and played a major role in its bowling attack during multiple title-winning campaigns. He took 170 wickets in 122 appearances for the team and contributed to four IPL titles.

He was also part of Mumbai Indians' 2011 Champions League Twenty20-winning side. After retiring as a player, Malinga returned to the franchise in mentoring and coaching roles, extending an association that lasted well over a decade.

His departure therefore marks the end of an important chapter for a franchise that relied on his experience as a player and specialist fast-bowling coach. His knowledge of death bowling and high-pressure situations had been part of his value to the team.

Contributions of Mhambrey and Hopkinson

Paras Mhambrey has also had a long relationship with Mumbai Indians, working with the franchise from 2010 to 2017 before returning in 2024. His experience in coaching and player development was used to support the team's bowling resources.

Carl Hopkinson joined ahead of the 2025 season and brought experience from his work with the England men's team. His role focused on fielding standards and the technical aspects of performance in the field.

Rebuilding After a Difficult Season

Mumbai Indians finished ninth in the 2026 IPL standings and missed the playoffs for the fourth time in six editions. For a franchise with five IPL titles, the result prompted questions about the balance of the squad, coaching methods and consistency across the season.

Coaching changes can provide a team with an opportunity to review preparation, tactical decisions, player development and internal responsibilities. However, a change in staff does not guarantee improved results; the impact depends on recruitment, player fitness, execution and the broader competition.

Preparing for IPL 2027

The franchise will now need to finalise its support structure and prepare for the next season's planning and auction. Decisions about replacements and the distribution of coaching responsibilities will help determine how the team approaches its rebuilding effort.

Malinga's exit is particularly notable because of his contribution to the franchise as both a player and a coach. As Mumbai Indians move into a new phase, the challenge will be to preserve the team's strengths while addressing the issues that affected its 2026 campaign.
