- Amarinder Singh Raja Warring formally submitted his resignation as Punjab Congress president to Rahul Gandhi in Delhi on Friday, and suggested that Punjab in-charge Sachin Pilot may have been behind the decision to remove him.
Warring, who had been Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee chief for about four-and-a-half years since April 2022, said he chose to submit his resignation to Rahul Gandhi because he was the leader who had appointed him to the post. Speaking to reporters, Warring said, "Given my long journey in politics, I feel that Sachin Pilot must have decided it was time to remove 'Raja' from the post," while acknowledging he had no concrete evidence for this and that he had met Pilot only once since he took charge as the party's Punjab affairs in-charge. He added that whatever the party had decided, he had accepted it willingly. The leadership change follows an organisational review by Pilot, who replaced Bhupesh Baghel as Punjab in-charge and held a series of consultations with senior leaders before submitting his assessment to the central Congress leadership. The shake-up comes amid reports of a prolonged rift between Warring and former chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi over control of the state unit ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections. Former Sangrur MP Vijay Inder Singla has emerged as the frontrunner to succeed Warring, with the party expected to announce his successor shortly.
