The gold-medal contest finished level at 5-5 before Kumkum sealed the title in a shoot-off, shooting a 10 while Oh Yejin managed only an 8. The win made Kumkum the first Indian woman to win an Asian Games medal in the individual recurve event, surpassing the achievement of Tarundeep Rai, who had won silver in the men's individual recurve at Guangzhou 2010 and remained, until now, the only Indian to medal in an individual recurve event at the Games. Her run to the final also secured one of the two available individual quota places for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics in the women's recurve event, with India yet to secure a team quota. The gold capped a remarkable Asian Games for the teenager, who finished with three medals in total, two gold and a silver. On Friday, she had already combined with Ankita Bhakat and Kirti Sharma to win India's first-ever women's team recurve gold, beating South Korea 5-3, before adding a mixed-team silver alongside Dhiraj Bommadevara. In the men's individual recurve event, India's Neeraj Chauhan beat compatriot Dhiraj Bommadevara to claim bronze, adding to India's historic showing in recurve archery at these Games.
