Karnataka: 2 Killed, 3 Injured After Speeding Car Overturns Thrice, Crashes Into Tree on National Highway in Kodagu

Two people lost their lives and three others were injured when a speeding car lost control, overturned three times and crashed into a roadside tree on the national highway in Karnataka's Kodagu district. The accident took place at a curve near Marutinagar, and police have registered a case and begun an investigation.

How the Accident Happened

According to the police, the car was travelling at high speed when the driver lost control of the vehicle at a curve near Marutinagar. The car overturned three times on the road before crashing into a tree on the roadside. The force of the impact left the vehicle badly damaged. The occupants are reported to be residents of Chitradurga district, who were travelling on the highway through Kodagu at the time of the accident.

The Casualties

One person died on the spot. The seriously injured driver, Thimma Nayaka, was rushed to the Madikeri District Hospital, where he was admitted for treatment. However, he succumbed to his injuries on Saturday, October 17, raising the death toll to two. The remaining three passengers escaped with minor injuries to their heads, legs and hands and were given medical care. Their condition is reported to be stable.

Police Action

The Suntikoppa police rushed to the spot after receiving information about the accident and shifted the injured to hospital. A case has been registered, and the police are examining the circumstances that led to the crash. Investigators will look at factors such as the speed of the vehicle, the condition of the road and whether driver fatigue, a mechanical failure or poor visibility played a role. Statements of the survivors are likely to be recorded once they have recovered sufficiently.

The Risks of Highway Curves

The stretch of national highway through Kodagu is known for its curves, slopes and changing weather conditions, which can make driving difficult, particularly for those who are unfamiliar with the terrain. Rain, mist and wet surfaces can reduce traction and visibility, and speeding on a curve increases the chance of losing control. Road safety experts say that vehicles that overturn multiple times often cause fatal injuries because of the repeated impact on the occupants, especially when seat belts are not used properly.

Road Safety Reminders

Officials and safety advocates regularly urge motorists to follow speed limits, especially on curves and ghat sections, to wear seat belts at all times, including in the rear seats, and to avoid driving when tired. They also recommend taking breaks on long journeys and checking the condition of tyres and brakes before setting out. Highway authorities are often asked to place clear warning signs, reflectors and crash barriers at accident-prone curves to reduce the chance of such accidents.

The tragedy is the latest in a series of road accidents reported from different parts of Karnataka in recent weeks, and it has once again drawn attention to the need for stricter enforcement of traffic rules and better safety infrastructure on the state's highways.

This report is based on published news coverage and statements attributed to the police. The investigation is ongoing.
