‘Is CEC A Citizen Of India?' On Voter Record Row, Gyanesh Kumar's Office Tells BharathINN Digital 'No Anomaly'

The office of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar has told BharathINN Digital that there is "no anomaly" in his own voter record, after Trinamool Congress leader Saket Gokhale questioned how the CEC's name appears on the current electoral roll when, according to Gokhale, it could not be traced in the previous Special Intensive Revision (SIR) rolls. The clarification: Kumar's name is mapped to his father's entry in the last SIR in Uttar Pradesh, where his father is a resident.

"Please be informed that his name is mapped against his father's name (who is a resident of UP) in the last SIR. There is no anomaly," the CEC's office said in response to a BharathINN Digital query.

The former Rajya Sabha MP had raised the questions on Monday in a post on X, asking, "Is CEC Gyanesh Kumar a citizen of India?"

Gokhale said Kumar is listed as a voter in the Delhi draft SIR electoral roll as "Gyanesh Kumar, son of Subodh Kumar". He noted that Kumar was born in Uttar Pradesh, is a Kerala cadre IAS officer, and has had postings in Delhi.

According to Gokhale, he searched for "Gyanesh Kumar, son of Subodh Kumar" in the previous SIR rolls of Uttar Pradesh, Kerala and Delhi but could not find a matching entry. "Shockingly, in all 3 states, there is NOBODY registered as Gyanesh Kumar, son of Subodh Kumar in the last SIR," he said.

"Now, if such an entry doesn't exist in previous SIR, his current name on voter list should be flagged as a 'logical discrepancy' & he should've gotten a notice," Gokhale added.

Saket Gokhale's Questions To The ECI

Gokhale sought clarification from the Election Commission on four points — which state's previous SIR roll Kumar has been mapped to, whether he was a registered voter in 2002/2003, how his name appears on the current electoral roll if he is missing from the previous SIR rolls of Kerala, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh, and whether he received a notice as an "unmapped voter" or for a "logical discrepancy".

Questions Come Amid Delhi SIR

The questions come amid the ongoing Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in Delhi, during which the Election Commission has been issuing notices to voters over discrepancies in their details and their linkage with previous SIR rolls. Gokhale's post specifically focused on how Kumar's current voter entry was mapped to the previous SIR records and whether the same procedure applied to him.
