IPL 2027 Auction: Big Update on Date and Venue as Goa Likely to Host Mini-Auction on December 16

The date and venue of the Indian Premier League's 2027 player auction appear to have been settled, with Goa expected to host the mini-auction on December 16, 2026. The decision, which was communicated to franchises by the Board of Control for Cricket in India's logistics team, would bring the auction back to Indian soil after three straight editions overseas.

Date and Venue

According to reports, the BCCI has asked the ten franchises to prepare travel and accommodation for an auction at the ITC Grand Goa, with an auction briefing for team representatives on December 15. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed that the auction will be held on December 16, adding that after hosting the event in three foreign locations in the past, the board is going to host it in Goa in December. The date was first conveyed through a logistics message to help teams with bookings, and a formal email to owners and chief executives is yet to be sent, so there is still a small chance of a change. Earlier talk had suggested December 14 as a possible date.

Returning Home After Three Overseas Auctions

The last three auctions were held abroad, in Dubai in 2023, in Jeddah in November 2024 and in Abu Dhabi in December 2025. The BCCI had wanted to bring the event back to India earlier but could not find a suitable venue during the busy wedding season. IPL chairman Arun Dhumal said that the board definitely wanted it to be held in the country this year, given that it would be a smaller auction. Goa will host an IPL auction for the first time in this format, although the state had hosted the second auction in 2009 at a hotel in Aguada.

The Last Mini-Auction of the Cycle

The December event will be a mini-auction and the last one of the current 2023 to 2027 cycle. Unlike the mega auction held in Jeddah in 2024, it is expected to be a one-day affair in which franchises fill gaps in their squads after retentions and releases. All ten franchises must submit their lists of retained and released players by November 15. Several trades have already taken place, including reported swaps involving Rishabh Pant, who has returned to the Delhi Capitals, and Kuldeep Yadav, who has moved to the Lucknow Super Giants, as well as a trade involving T Natarajan and Sunrisers Hyderabad.

A Scheduling Clash

The likely date creates an overlap with India's international calendar. India is scheduled to play Sri Lanka in the second ODI of a series at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on December 16. The series opener on December 13 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi has yet to find another venue because the stadium is due to undergo drainage and pitch revamp work. It remains to be seen whether either schedule will be adjusted, although auctions can generally proceed without the involvement of international players.

Looking Ahead to IPL 2027

The 2027 edition will be the 20th season of the league. Reports suggest that it is likely to begin on March 14 and end with the final on May 30, although the official schedule is yet to be announced. Royal Challengers Bengaluru are the defending champions after winning the title in consecutive years, and the auction will give rivals a chance to strengthen their squads to challenge them.

For fans, the biggest takeaway is that the auction is coming home. With all franchises preparing to travel to Goa, attention will now turn to the retention lists due next month and the names that could attract the highest bids in December.

This report is based on published news coverage. The date and venue are subject to formal confirmation.
