HD Kumaraswamy Signals Ambitions for NDA’s Chief Ministerial Role in 2028 Karnataka Polls

Union Minister and Janata Dal (Secular) leader H.D. Kumaraswamy appears to be positioning himself as a potential chief ministerial face for the National Democratic Alliance ahead of the 2028 Karnataka Assembly elections. His recent remarks and criticism of Congress leaders have added to speculation about the leadership arrangement the BJP and JD(S) might pursue if they contest the next election together.

Alliance Leadership and Seat-Sharing

The BJP and JD(S) face important decisions about how to divide constituencies and present a common leadership strategy. While an alliance may help both parties consolidate support in selected regions, seat-sharing negotiations can become difficult when each party seeks to protect its own electoral prospects and political identity.

Political analyst Sandeep Shastri, cited in The New Indian Express report, suggested that JD(S) could seek between 40 and 60 seats. Such an arrangement would require the BJP to balance the advantages of cooperation against its own ambition to expand its presence and potentially secure a majority independently.

Regional Political Competition

The Old Mysuru region is likely to remain important to the alliance’s calculations, given the competition for Vokkaliga support and the political rivalry involving Kumaraswamy and Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar. The ability of BJP and JD(S) supporters to transfer their votes between alliance partners could prove as significant as the formal number of constituencies allocated to each party.

Former Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa has expressed confidence that the two parties will work together in the next Assembly election. Congress leaders, meanwhile, have dismissed predictions of an NDA victory. These competing statements reflect the early positioning that often begins well before a state election campaign.

What Could Determine the Outcome?

The alliance’s eventual strategy will depend on negotiations over seats, leadership, campaign coordination and regional priorities. A chief ministerial claim made by an individual leader does not amount to a formal alliance decision. Any final arrangement will need to be negotiated and communicated by the parties involved.

With the election still ahead, Kumaraswamy’s positioning signals a possible direction for JD(S), but the outcome will depend on how the BJP-JD(S) relationship develops and whether the alliance can turn its combined support into electoral gains.
