Key Highlights
  • After its 48-hour deadline for Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar to resign lapsed, the Cockroach Janata Party began its nationwide "Jail Bharo Andolan" protest from Mumbai's Shivaji Park on October 2, demanding his resignation and changes to the SIR process.

CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke had earlier warned that if Kumar did not resign by Saturday, the party would begin its nationwide protest from Mumbai on October 2 and take it to cities across the country. The party has described the agitation as peaceful and said it would move on to a stir at Jantar Mantar in Delhi if the CEC continued to stay in office. "Gyanesh Kumar should resign and should face criminal charges," Dipke told reporters in Mumbai ahead of the protest. The CJP's demands extend beyond Kumar's resignation: the party is also calling for criminal proceedings against him, a halt to the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, and restoration of the January 2025 electoral roll, along with changes to the law governing Election Commission appointments. The protest adds to a broader wave of opposition pressure on the CEC in recent weeks, including objections raised by Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi over the SIR process, and the INDIA bloc's own planned "Save Democracy" marches and a march to the ECI office. The Election Commission has maintained that its SIR-related orders were approved unanimously by the full Commission.
