Chess Olympiad 2026 Torch Handed Over to Uzbekistan's GM Javokhir Sindarov

BENGALURU, SEPT 14 — The official countdown for the Chess Olympiad 2026, scheduled to take place in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, has officially begun. Marking the occasion, the traditional Olympiad Torch was handed over to Uzbekistan’s leading grandmaster and winner of the 2026 Candidates Tournament, Javokhir Sindarov.

The torch was presented by Vishwanathan Anand, FIDE Interim President and chess legend, alongside Nitin Narang, President of the All India Chess Federation (AICF).

The Chess Olympiad, widely regarded as one of the most prestigious team-based chess competitions globally, will be held in Samarkand from September 15 to 27. The event is set to feature top international grandmasters competing for the coveted title.

The tradition of relaying the Chess Olympiad Torch—modeled after the Olympic Games torch relay—was introduced by FIDE in 2022. The initiative aims to reflect the global reach of chess and build worldwide excitement leading up to the tournament.

Speaking at the event, AICF President Nitin Narang highlighted the significance of the tradition, stating, "The Chess Olympiad Torch is a powerful symbol of chess connecting nations and generations. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated this tradition in India in 2022. It is truly special that the torch is moving from India, the birthplace of chess, to Uzbekistan. As Samarkand prepares to welcome the chess world, we extend our best wishes to Javokhir Sindarov and Uzbekistan."

India enters the 2026 tournament as the defending champion in both the Open and Women’s divisions, making them strong favorites to retain their titles in Samarkand.
