Channi Sahib Has Won': Raja Warring After Resigning as Punjab Congress Chief
Key Highlights
  • After formally resigning as Punjab Congress chief, Amarinder Singh Raja Warring said "Channi Sahib has won," calling his departure a victory for former chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi and hinting that new state in-charge Sachin Pilot may have wanted him removed.

Warring met former Congress president Rahul Gandhi in Delhi on Friday and formally handed him his resignation, telling reporters afterward, "I met Rahul Gandhi and formally gave him my resignation... He made me the state Congress chief, and I thanked him for giving me the opportunity to lead the state Congress in difficult circumstances." He insisted the decision was his own, saying, "Nobody asked me to resign. I had realised what the situation was, and when I felt that the situation had come to a head, I voluntarily gave my resignation and changed my social media handles to 'former PCC president.'" Warring went on to link his exit to Sachin Pilot, who recently replaced Bhupesh Baghel as the AICC's Punjab affairs in-charge after Baghel spent weeks trying to placate feuding factions in the state unit. "Maybe Sachin Pilot felt that it was not appropriate... Channi Sahib has won," Warring said, referring to prolonged infighting with former chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi and other senior leaders, including MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, who had been pushing for his removal. Former Indian hockey team captain Pargat Singh was announced as the new Punjab Congress chief following Warring's resignation, ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.
