  • A viral video showing around 300 security personnel jumping on a newly constructed foot overbridge at Ujjain's Mahakaleshwar Temple has sparked questions over its safety testing method.

A 91-foot-long footbridge has been constructed within the Mahakaleshwar Temple complex in Ujjain to facilitate the movement of devotees visiting the Nagchandreshwar Temple. The shrine is open to the public for only 24 hours once a year on Nag Panchami and attracts lakhs of devotees. The newly constructed bridge was reportedly built with financial support from a donor.

However, a video showing an unusual method of testing the bridge's strength has now sparked a controversy on social media. The footage purportedly shows around 300 security personnel jumping together on the bridge for nearly 10 minutes as part of a load-bearing test.

The unusual testing method has raised questions about the safety protocols followed before the bridge was opened for use. Critics have questioned why the structural strength of the bridge was not assessed through established engineering procedures involving Public Works Department (PWD) engineers, quality-control laboratories and scientifically approved load-testing methods.

The incident has also drawn political attention, with AIMIM leader Saddam Owaisi taking a dig at the reported testing method. Questions are also being raised over accountability, with critics asking who would have been responsible had the bridge failed during the exercise and resulted in injuries to the security personnel.

The episode has further triggered a debate over whether modern engineering expertise, technical assessments and standard administrative safety procedures should have been followed to determine the structural stability and load-bearing capacity of the bridge.

Ujjain Stampede

In a separate news from Madhya Pradesh in Ujjain, several devotees were reportedly injured after a stampede-like situation occurred at the Mahakaleshwar Nath Chandreshwar Temple. The incident took place as a large crowd gathered at the temple on Sawan Somvar.

According to preliminary reports, panic erupted among the devotees following rumours that an electric current had spread through the crowd. The heavy rush reportedly caused barricades to give way, further escalating the situation.

After being alerted, senior officials reached the location and launched rescue and relief efforts. Those injured in the incident were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
